Charles Drew at summer camp. Future US physician Charles Richard Drew (1904-1950) among those at Camp Craft, a summer camp held in Salem, New Jersey, USA, in 1920. Drew is standing in the third row, fourth from the left. At the time, he was a student at Dunbar High School, Washing DC, USA. Drew's dissertation in the 1930s was titled 'Banked Blood'. His work improved blood storage and blood transfusion, which helped save many lives during World War II. He was the first black surgeon to serve as an examiner on the American Board of Surgery. Photographed on 22 August 1920.
