Artist's Description
Charles Baskerville (1870-1922), US chemist. Baskerville studied at a number of institutions, including the University of Mississippi, the University of Virginia, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Berlin. It was at the University of North Carolina that he obtained his doctorate (1894). In 1904, he announced the discovery of two new elements Carolinium and berzelium he had separated from thorium, but the following year is was shown they were still thorium. From 1904 he was professor of chemistry at the City College of New York. He published numerous papers and a number of books, including 'School Chemistry' (1899) and 'Municipal Chemistry' (1911)
