Description
Cenote Sagrado, Chichen Itza, Mexico. Cenote Sagrado (The Well of Sacrifice) is a sacred site used by the Maya civilisation, where sacrificial ceremonies took place. Offerings of gold, pottery and human sacrifices were thrown into the water- filled cavern, which is around 12 metres deep. Chichen Itza is a pre-Columbian archaeological site found in the northern center of the Yucatan Peninsula. It dates from the Late Classic, through the Terminal Classic and into Early Postclassic periods. The site was built by the Maya civilisation between these periods and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
