Celestial compass points. 17th-century diagram showing the compass points as projected into the night sky and used on celestial bodies. Human figures are at the poles. East (oriental) and West (occidental) are labelled with Latin abbreviations. This diagram is from 'Sphaera mundi' (1635) by Italian Jesuit astronomer and mathematician Giuseppe Biancani (1566-1624).
