Artist's Description

Celebration of the dead. 19th-century artwork of a group of people among overgrown and ancient tombstones in a cemetery, eating and drinking during a celebration of the dead. Several cultures worldwide celebrate the dead in this fashion, including those of Mexico and Moldova. This woodcut dates from the 1870s, when Moldova was part of the Russian Empire. Families in Moldovan culture go to the graveyard to eat and drink, to remember dead relatives, and to mark the cycle of life and death. In the background (top left) a funeral is in progress. This woodcut dates from around 1871.
