Cat stomach. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the wall of the gastric fundus of a cat (Felis domestica). The fundus is at the top of the stomach and is the widest part. The upper layer is the glandular mucosa, which has gastric pits (dark brown) where the gastric glands open to the digestive lumen (top). The yellow layer across centre is the submucosa, which contains blood vessels (red ovals, some with red blood cells in), lymph vessels and nerves. Beneath this are three layers of smooth muscle (orange), above the basement serous membrane (bottom). Magnification: x2.5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
