Description
Composite image of the Cartwheel galaxy group. This image is composed from images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in optical wavelengths and the Chandra space telescope in X-ray wavelengths (purple). The Cartwheel galaxy (right) has a complicated structure thought to be due to a collision with a smaller galaxy that passed through the middle of the Cartwheel galaxy. X-rays from Chandra telescope show disturbed hot gas initially hosted by the Cartwheel galaxy being dragged over more than 150, 000 light years by the collision. The Cartwheel galaxy (also known as PGC 2248 or ESO 350-40) is located about 500 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Sculptor.
