Composite image of the Cartwheel galaxy and its companion spiral galaxies. This image is composed of images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope's (JWST) Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCAm, blue, orange and yellow coloured) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI, red-coloured). The Cartwheel Galaxy is a ring galaxy located 500 million light years in the constellation Sculptor. It was formed 400 million years ago as a result of a high-speed collision between a spiral galaxy and a smaller galaxy (not visible). The Cartwheel Galaxy has a bright inner ring and an active outer ring. In between these rings, the galaxy has spokes seen as red streaks, caused by glowing, hydrocarbon-rich dust. These spokes are also seen in its companion spiral galaxy (top left). Blue dots among the dust shows stars or areas of star formation.
