Artist's Description
Gravity caricature. Caricature of Isaac Newton's laws of gravity showing 9 men having the contents of their heads weighed at a 'weighing house'. The men form a vertical semi-circle and are shown in a range of attitudes depending on their personality. The man at the bottom (marked 'A'), whose head weighs so much that he is upside down, is called 'absolute gravity'. The man at the top (marked 'I'), whose head weighs nothing at all, is called 'absolute levity or stark fool'. The level-headed man (marked 'E') is called 'horizontal, or good sense'. Taken from the frontispiece of John Clubbe's Physiognomy (1763).
