Laughing gas. Caricature of a man giving his scolding wife some nitrous oxide (laughing gas, N2O). Scolding is a term for complaining. Another man's wife is laughing uncontrollably following a dose of gas. Laughing gas' euphoric effects were discovered by the British chemist Humphry Davy in 1799. This effect made the gas popular at certain parties of this time. Nitrous oxide was first used as an anaesthetic in the USA from the mid 1840s. This caricature, entitled Living Made Easy, is from 1830.
