Artist's Description

Carbon electric arc lamp. Historical illustration of an electric arc being produced between carbon electrodes. This device was invented by British chemist Humphry Davy (1778-1829) in the first decade of the 19th century. It was the first practical electric light. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
