Description
Carbon capture technology. Cutaway illustration showing a technology developed to capture and store carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) is a measure designed to reduce global emissions of carbon dioxide. CCS technologies are being developed that will trap the CO2 emitted from power stations and industrial plants (upper left) and oil pumps (upper centre) and store it beneath ground (lower right), potentially mitigating climate change. This process is also known as carbon sequestration. Here, the CO2 has been injected deep beneath the potable water table (blue layers) into deep saline aquifers (turquoise layer).
