Carbon atom and graphene, conceptual image. Computer illustration showing the orbits (blue lines, oval) of electrons (bright spots) around the nucleus in a single carbon atom (centre), with sheets of graphene molecules (top and bottom) in the background. Each carbon atom contains 6 electrons, which orbit the 6 protons and 6 neutrons that make up its nucleus. Graphene is an allotrope of carbon, where the individual carbon atoms in each molecule take on a hexagonal arrangement.
