Artist's Description
Camille Flammarion (1842-1925), French astronomer and author, looking through a telescope on the terrace of his private observatory at Juvisy-sur-Orge, France. In 1882, after working for the Paris Observatory, Flammarion founded L'Astronomie, a monthly popular astronomy magazine. The following year he founded the observatory of Juvisy-sur-Orge and, in 1887, the French Astronomical Society (Societe Astronomique de France). Flammarion wrote many books, the best known of which is L'Astronomie Populaire (1879). Craters on the Moon and Mars are named in his honour.
