Calton Hill Observatory plans. Copy of the original architectural plans for the Calton Hill Observatory (later City Observatory), Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded in 1776, this observatory was the original site of the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, Scotland. It was directed by the Astronomer Royal of Scotland. These plans are for the observatory buildings constructed from 1818 to a design by William Henry Playfair (1790-1857). By 1888, many of the instruments had become obsolete and a new Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, opened on Blackford Hill. Named at bottom is Scottish mathematician and astronomer William Galbraith (1786-1850).
