Description
Cadmium (Cd). Diagram of the nuclear composition, electron configuration, chemical data, and valence orbitals of an atom of cadmium-114 (atomic number: 48), the most common isotope of this element. The nucleus consists of 48 protons (red) and 66 neutrons (orange). 48 electrons (white) successively occupy available electron shells (rings). Cadmium is a transition metal in group 12, period 5, and the d-block of the periodic table. It has a melting point of 321 degrees Celsius, a much lower melting point than most of the other transition metals, since the d-subshell shielding effect of outer (valence) electrons ends. It is used in some solar panels and batteries.
