Description
Bust of George Ellery Hale (1868-1938), American astronomer. This bust is located at the Palomar Observatory, found in the Palomar Mountains in San Diego, California, USA. Hale founded several observatories, such as Palomar, Yerkes and Mount Wilson. The Hale telescope at Palomar Observatory, the Hale cycle of solar activity, and several space objects are named after him. Hale invented the spectroheliograph, a device used to study the Sun, when he was an undergraduate at MIT. He became editor of the Astrophysical Journal in 1895 and was awarded the 1904 Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, the 1916 Bruce Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and the 1932 Copley Medal of the Royal Society.
