Artist's Description
British and American Indian raids, 1812. Illustration showing the role played by American Indians in the war between the British, the USA and the British US colonies in 1812. The scene shows the practice of offering bounties for American scalps. At left a British officer receives a bloody scalp from an Indian, armed with a knife, tomahawk and flintlock gun. The officer is depicted as saying: 'Bring me the Scalps and the King our master will reward you.' A tag at lower left says 'Secret Service Money.' At right, another Indian is scalping fallen soldiers. A poem is across bottom, starting with the line: 'Arise Columbia's Sons'. This artwork, an etching with watercolour, is by William Charles (1776-1820), and was published in Philadelphia in 1812.
