Description
Emission, reflection and dark nebulae. Starfield centred on the constellations of Scorpius and Ophiuchus showing three different types of nebulae. Emission nebulae (yellow and pink) are clouds of gases, mainly hydrogen, which are ionised and lit up by the ultraviolet radiation of hot and young stars embedded in them. Reflection nebulae (blue) are associated with clouds of interstellar dust which reflect towards the Earth the radiation of nearby stars. Dark nebulae (centre and left of image) are caused by thick clouds of dust which absorb the radiation of stars behind them.
