Brass weapons from Ireland, 18th-century artwork. This artwork illustrated a paper written by English antiquarian Samuel Pegge (1704-1796) on discoveries made in 1780. The weapons were found preserved in a bog in Westmeath, Ireland. At left is an object known as a celt, possibly a weapon though its function is uncertain. At centre right is a large spear-like brass object with a socket for mounting on a pole. The date of the objects is not known, though the use of brass (i.e. bronze) rather than iron indicates they may be from the Bronze Age. Published in Volume 9 (1789) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
