Botanical geography of the Andes. Illustration depicting the distribution and variation in plant types on the mountains of the Andes in South America. The plant types vary by altitude. Snow-capped peaks and volcanoes are also shown, as well as the effects of clouds on the vegetation, especially at tropical latitudes. The text is in French. This illustration is from 'Essai sur la Geographie des Plantes' (1807) by German geographer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859).
