Description
Bone lengthening implant. Demonstration of a telescopic nail (lower centre) and the nail after implantion in a model of a human tibia (shin bone, upper centre). It is implanted during distraction osteogenesis, a surgical procedure that enables progressive bone lengthening. Once implanted, the nail is extended by about 1 millimetre a day over several months, which induces new bone growth. This procedure is often used to treat individuals with bone deformities or shorter bones than normal. Photographed at Montmartre Surgery Centre, Paris, France.
