Description
Bleeding in eye in a case of whooping cough. This haemorrhaging (bleeding) is from a blood vessel that has burst from the prolonged coughing that a whooping cough patient experiences. The blood has pooled beneath the conjunctiva, the membrane that covers the front of the eye. No treatment for the haemorrhaging is needed. It does not affect vision and the blood will be broken down and reabsorbed by the body within a few weeks. Whooping cough is a lung infection, most often of children, by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. The intense coughing is followed by an audible inwards breath, the 'whoop'. The disease is potentially fatal, and it is best prevented by vaccination.
