Description
Bladder wrack, light micrograph. Transverse section through a strand of bladder wrack (Fucus vesiculosa), showing the female conceptacles (round). These contain oogonia (reproductive structures, small red shapes) along with hair-like structures (paraphyses). Each oogonia contains an egg. Some of the eggs have been fertilised by spermatozoids (male reproductive cells). The fertilised eggs are growing and dividing to form new bladder wrack plants. Magnification: x11 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
