Description
Bighorn River. Coloured optical and infrared, Landsat satellite image of the upstream southern reaches of Bighorn River, Wyoming, USA. North is at top. Rivers, lined by cultivated fields (green) along their banks, sustain a riparian (riverside) ecosystem amidst the arid land (pink) of this high intermontane basin, Bighorn Basin. Rain tends to fall instead on surrounding mountains, such as the Bighorn Mountains (green and brown, upper right), forming rivers that run into Bighorn River (lower centre). This river runs north to Greybull River (centre left) and then Bighorn Lake (blue, upper centre) and Shoshone River (upper left).
