Artist's Description
Bed bugs with a US one cent coin. Bed bugs are wingless, parasitic insects of the family Cimcidae. The most common species is Cimex lectularius. These specimens are shed skins collected for analysis by entomologists. These wingless, parasitic insects are relatively flat, allowing them to hide in cracks and crevices. They grasp human skin with their forelegs, pierce the skin, and inject anticoagulant and an anaesthetic containing saliva. They feed at night. The female lays approximately 300 eggs. They don't transmit diseases but can cause skin infections from scratching bites. An adult bed bug is around 4 millimetres in length.
