Description
Barber-surgeons. 17th-century illustration of an interior view of a barber-surgeon's establishment. Two men are receiving minor surgical treatment. Blood-letting basins and jars of leeches are hanging from the ceiling. Blood-letting, the withdrawal of often large amounts of blood from a patient, was a common practice in medicine for thousands of years. The Latin text on the table at right indicates 'prudence'. The text on the table at left indicates 'strongly opposed'. Artwork by German engraver Wolfgang Kilian (1581-1662) from the book 'Microcosmus hypochondriacus' (1652) by German physician Malachias Geiger (1606-1671).
