Artist's Description

Banks insect collection, 18th century. Drawer of mounted and labelled specimens of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), part of the insect collection of the English naturalist Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820). Banks built up a collection of more than 4000 insects. Many were collected by Banks on Captain James Cook's first expedition (1768-1771). Banks presented his collection to the Linnean Society in 1804, which in turned passed it to the British Museum in 1863. The Natural History section of the British Museum became the Natural History Museum in 1881, where the collection now resides.
