Artist's Description
Bacteria from the hand. Bacterial colonies growing in the print of a human hand on agar gel. A hand was pressed onto the agar and the plate incubated. Under normal circumstances the skin is populated by its own colonies of beneficial bacteria. They help to defend the skin against harmful bacteria. Bacteria dislodged from skin on the hand's surface have fed on the specially selected nutrients in the agar gel and multiplied quickly. A single bacterial cell can become a colony of 250, 000 bacteria in six hours in these conditions. The bacterial colonies have become visible as dots in the shape of the hand. Other colonies outside the hand shape have grown from airborne bacteria.
