Description
Australopithecus skull. Fossilised skull of Australopithecus (or Paranthropus) robustus, a robust Australopithecine primate related to the animals from which humans evolved. This skull was found at Swartkrans, South Africa. It is thought to be about 1.7 million years old. Australopithecines were divided into the gracile, omnivorous types (such as A. afarensis) and the robust, typically herbivorous types such as this. The robust types died out around one million years ago. It is thought that the gracile Australopithecines were the ancestors of modern humans.
