Artist's Description

Athlete's foot fungus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fungus which causes athlete's foot (tinea pedis) in humans, showing a network of thin, branching filaments (hyphae). Several species of fungi cause tinea infections, affecting the skin, groin and scalp, as well as the feet. Athlete's foot usually affects the skin between the toes, which becomes itchy, sore and cracked. The condition contagious, and is associated with wearing shoes and sweating. It is treated with antifungal creams.
