Description
Astronomy muses, 18th century artwork. The muses are holding astronomical and measuring equipment, and one is pointing at a digram of the solar system. Between them, a cherub carries a banner with a Latin motto (weigh and measure). This artwork was published in 'Historia Coelestis Britannica' (1725), a book and star catalogue published posthumously for the English astronomer John Flamsteed (1646-1719). The star catalogue had been partially published in 1712 without Flamsteed's permission. The positions of 2935 stars were described. This artwork is by Louis du Guernier after Giovanni (Jean) Battista Catenaro.
