Assorted onions. Several types of onion including the common onion (Allium cepa) and closely related root vegetables. Clockwise from upper centre are: spring onions, shallots, onions, pickling onions (unpeeled and peeled), and red and white onions. A chopped onion (centre) reveals the internal layers that produce onion rings. These vegetables contain vitamins and minerals, as well as many other trace chemicals.
