Artist's Description

Assassin fly (Empis stercorea), light micrograph. The body of the fly is divided into three parts: the abdomen at the end of which are the genitalia; the thorax with one pair of wings, one pair of halteres (balancers) and three pairs of legs; and the head, which has one pair of compound eyes and ocelli (simple eyes), a pair of antennae, a pair of maxillary palps and the proboscis. This fly has long strong legs, which end in prominent claws and sucking pads to seize and hold its prey. The proboscis is used to feed on the body fluids of its prey. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
