The ozone layer absorbs most of the Sun's ultra- violet (UV) radiation; it occurs at an altitude of 14-24km, but is most concentrated at 17-21km (shown in white). The hole lets through the UV (purple). Altitudes are given by a Boeing 727 (12km), a Concorde (15km), & the ER-2 research plane (18km) used by NASA to investigate the hole. The hole first appeared in 1980, & has grown more severe each year. It is a seasonal phenomenon that occurs in the Antarctic spring. It is probably due to atmospheric pollution by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), chemicals used in aerosols & refrigerants. This is the version WITH the lettering naming the three aircraft.
