Artist's impression of the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) satellite. AXAF is being designed as the third of NASA's Great Observatories", intended to join the Hubble Telescope and the Gamma Ray Observatory in orbit in April 1997. When it starts to make observations, AXAF will offer 10 times the spatial resolution and 100 times the sensitivity of previous NASA X-ray telescopes. When the planned Space Infrared Telescope Facility is launched, astronomers will be able to simultaneously observe any cosmic source across the whole spectrum from infrared to gamma ray wavelengths."
