Description
Arctic sea ice maximum, March 2008, satellite image. This image, showing the Arctic above the Bering Strait (lower left) is based on satellite data. The Arctic sea ice (white) reaches a maximum in around March, at the end of the Arctic winter. This maximum extent for 2008 covered 15.21 million square kilometres. This maximum can be compared to the minimum reached later in the year in September (see E205/0213). The sea ice data for this image, obtained on 10 March, is from the AMSR-E (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS) sensor on NASA's Aqua satellite.
