Artist's Description
Anchor hole and draft markings. Close-up of a ship's anchor hole (upper centre) while in a dry dock. The numbers on the scale at lower right are the draft markings for the ship, measured in metres. The draft is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel). The change in colour of the hull paint marks the waterline, where the hull of the ship meets the surface of the water. Here, the draft is around 15 metres. The bottom of the hull is painted red, and the area above the waterline is painted white. Measuring the draft of the boat allows calculations to be made relating to the weight of the boat's load or cargo.
