Description
Ambelodon, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal lived during the Miocene (23 to 5 million years ago). It is a proboscidean, an example of the group of animals from which elephants evolved. It used its lower shovel-shaped tusks to dig up roots and other vegetation to feed on. Its fossils have been found in North America.
