Description
Alveolar cells. Computer artwork of type II alveolar cells. This cell is found in the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs. They are covered in fine microvilli (grey hair-like structures) and secrete surfactant, a substance that reduces surface tension in the air sac and prevents it from collapsing.
