Alvan Clark and Yerkes 40-inch lens. 19th-century artwork of US telescope maker Alvan Clark (centre, 1804-1887) and the 40-inch lens for the refractor at the Yerkes Observatory (opened 1897). Founded in 1846, in Cambridgeport, Massachusetts, USA, the Alvan Clark and Sons telescope factory produced many of the largest lenses of the time, including this one. Artwork from the 21st volume (first period of 1898) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
