Allegorical temperance map, 1838. This allegorical depiction of the temptations of alcohol consumption was produced by John Christian Wiltberger, Jr. (1766-1851), a US minister, missionary to Liberia and temperance activist. The moral journey starts from the Ocean of Animal Appetite (left) and ends in the Ocean of Eternity (right). The upper land mass (Self Denial) contrasts with the lower land mass (Inebriation). Features include the Sea of Intemperance, the Sea of Temperance (and the islands of Poverty and Murder), the Sea of Anguish, the Gulf of Wretchedness, the Bay of Remorse, the Gulf of Perdition, Wine Lake, Beer Lake, Brandy Lake, Rum Lake, Gin Lake, and Whiskey Lake. Allegorical regions include Industry, Improvement, Prosperity, Enjoyment, Plenty, the Territory of Indulgence, Ruin, False Security, False Pleasure, False Comfort, False Hopes and Total Indifference.
