Artist's Description

Alexander Graham Bell's kite, 1908. Round tetrahedral kite developed by Scottish-US inventor Alexander Graham Bell (far right, 1847-1922) and being tested with his assistants and a young boy. Bell had been experimenting with such designs since 1898, culminating in his much larger tetrahedral wings (Cygnet I, II and III) that flew in the period 1907 to 1912. Numerous tests were carried out at the family's summer residence at Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Canada. Bell built a laboratory and estate here, carrying out tests from the mountaintop. A red fabric was used for the kites to help them stand out against the sky. Photographed on 7 July 1908.
