Description
Albrecht Durer (1471-1528), German artist, 19th-century print after a 1498 self-portrait. Born in Nuremburg, Germany, Durer travelled to and brought new ideas back from Italy in 1494 and 1505. He did much to introduce the Renaissance to northern Europe. His skilful use of perspective and mathematical proportions made him one of the outstanding artistic figures of the early 16th century. He produced many portraits, woodcuts, engravings and watercolours. His best known work, 'Four books on Human Proportions' was published posthumously in 1528. This print is by engraver John Corner, and was published in London in 1825. The inset shows Durer's 'Knight, Death, and the Devil'.
