Description
Alan Turing finishing second in a race. British mathematician and pioneering computer scientist Alan Turing (1912-1954) worked at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, London, UK, from 1945 to 1947. It was during this period that he worked on the ACE (Automatic Computing Engine), an early computer. Turing, who had worked on code breaking during the Second World War, went on to work on other early computer designs in Manchester. Turing was a talented long-distance runner, especially at marathon distances. This race was run over a distance of three miles. Photographed in the UK on 26 December 1946.
