Description
African lion cub (Panthera leo). The African lion is a predatory carnivore that lives in the savannah grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa. Usually between two and four cubs are born in a litter. They feed on their mother's milk for four months, eating some meat from around six weeks of age. Many cubs do not survive their first year, being killed by predators while their mother is hunting, or by a male who takes over the pride (a lion's social group). Female cubs stay with their own pride, while the males leave at around three years of age to find their own pride. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa.
