Washington D. C. Oblique (looking west) aerial infrared image of Washington, District of Columbia (D. C. ), the capital city of the United States of America. In the infrared range green vegetation appears red, buildings are grey and water is blue. The city lies at the confluence of the Potomac (upper left) and Anacostia (bottom left) rivers. The American President's residence, the White House, is at upper centre, whilst the parliament building, the Capitol, is at lower centre. The largest office building in the world, the Pentagon (at far left), houses the Department of Defense. The major rail terminus at centre right is Union Station.
