Adipose tissue, illustration. Adipose tissue's role is the storage and metabolism of fats (lipids). It forms an insulating layer under the skin, storing energy in the form of fat created from excess food. Almost the entire volume of each fat cell (round) consists of a single lipid (fat or oil) droplet. The rest of the structure is supporting connective tissue (orange).
