Artist's Description

Acid rain erosion. Stone statue that has been eroded by acid rain. Acid rain is the result of a chemical reaction in the atmosphere between water droplets and pollutant gases, notably sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen. These pollutants are mainly formed by the burning of fossil fuels. The atmospheric reactions form sulphuric acid and nitric acid, which fall to the ground in the rain, increasing the acidity of soil and water in rivers and lakes. Stone statues are eroded by the acid in the rain, and other stone monuments and buildings are also affected. Photographed in Hyde Park, London, UK.
