Artist's Description

Abraham casting out Hagar. 1788 illustration of the prophet Abraham (left) casting out his wife and mother of Ishmael (lower centre) Hagar (right). Hagar was the Egyptian handmaiden of Sarai (Sarah, left), the first wife of Abraham. In the Islamic faith, Hagar is considered the second wife of Abraham, whereas in mainstream Christianity, she is thought of as Abraham's concubine. Tensions between Sarai and Hagar grew and when Sarai found Ishmael mocking her son she demanded that Abraham send Hagar and Ishmael away.
